Capital Institute of Basic education Research

Capital Institute of Basic Education Research(CIBER), jointly funded by Beijing Normal University(BNU) and Beijing Municipal Commission of Education Work (BMCEW), Beijing Municipal Commission of Education((BMCE) in May 2006, is an entity unit directly affiliated BNU with independent teaching and research. In order to provide better services to the Capital and the whole country’s basic education, BNU had five research centres integrated into CIBER, including Research Center for Basic Education Curriculum of the Ministry of Education, Science Education Research Centre, Centre for Environmental Education, Science Education and Communication Research Center, National Primary and Secondary School Computer Education Research Center.

In May 2007, CIBER began to recruit master graduates in the speciality of curriculum and teaching method(learning science oriented)

At present, CIBER has a total of 21 official staff. There are 16 full-time researchers, including 1 professor, 3 associate professors and 12 lecturers.

CIBER aims to serve for national and Beijing’s basic education reform and development, paying attention to each student's growth and continuously pushing forward the balanced development of basic education and the enhance of education quality. Since establishment, CIBER, according to request of the Ministry of Education, Beijing Municipal and BNU, has based on the demand of basic education development and reform, closely followed the forefront of academic research, made great efforts to study the multi-level integration between the brain and learning science, working hard to resolve the focus, difficult and hot issues in basic education, formed a high level of interdisciplinary, cross-cutting research team, and achieved gratifying results in many ways.

With the aim of serving for basic education and interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary construction, CIBER sets "the brain and learning sciences" as the core subject and has been initially formed 4 distinctive research areas including brain and learning sciences, teaching and research system building, regional basic education planning and system innovation, basic education policy.

In the area of brain and learning sciences, CIBER has accumulated plenty of experience and research achivements in the forefront and progess of brain and learning sciences, learning science and design, learning science and technology, teachers’ cognitive and development; Meanwhile, CIBER has a richful comprehensive research accumulation in brain and language learning (including Chinese and English), brain and mathematics learning, brain and science education and so on.

In the area of basic education policy and system building research, CIBER provides Annual Survey Report on Balanced Development of Compulsory Education in Beijing to Beijing municipal government and BMCE each year since 2006; undertaking a great number of research subjects commited by Beijing municipal;Implementing study on teaching and research system and teaching researcher in the whole country; At the same time, CIBER has many research resources and experience in the area of regional basic education planning and system innovation, basic education policy research.

Since establishment, CIBER has received many research project grants from various domestic and foreignal organizations such as "National Philosophy and Social Science 11th Five-Year Plan", "Beijing Municipal Education Science 11th Five-Year Plan ", the Ministry of Education, Beijing municipal government, the Ford Foundation commission, etc.. In addition, CIBER has carried out several major projects such as the "modernization building of basic education in rural areas ". Nowadays, there are totally over 30 research programs .

To strengthen the building of disciplines, CIBER constantly integrates advantage resources among many relative units,cooperating with the The National Key Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning, College of Psychology, College of Education, College of Education Administration and so on in academic research, curriculum-building, graduate training, application and implementation of major issues.

CIBER, actively strengthening international cooperation and exchanges, has also established a good relationship with some well-known universities, academics and relevant agencies of the United States, Canada, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, and some other countries and areas.
