Institute of Chinese Information Processing

Institute of Chinese Information Processing of Beijing Normal University established in Jan, 2004. The institute takes advantage of the superiority of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in BNU. It devotes to strengthen the basic research for the application of Chinese information processing, promote the inosculation of Linguistics and Computer Science so as to push the development of Computational Linguistics - a Interdisciplinary studies of those two subjects forward, build cooperation platform in Chinese information processing field, make it possible that the experts of universities, scientific research institutes and high-tech enterprises can work together to explore a new road for Chinese information processing theory and applied research, foster the amphibious talented persons who are proficient in both Linguistics and Computer Science for the nation, create competitive advantage of our country in natural language processing area and safeguard the information security of the nation.

The institute undertook A Basic Research for the Application of Chinese Information Processing which was one of the programs of Hi – Tech Research and Development Program of China named 863 Program. It sought for new scientific research and program managing methods for marketing economy. A connection of Linguistics and Computer Science was made and the composite talents were trained after the institute set up. The institute took efforts to solve key problems in Chinese information processing through semantic research. The specialists and scholars of Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing University of Posts And Telecommunications, Beijing Normal University, Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Applied Linguistics Ministry of Education, China Electronics Technology Group Corporation No.54th Research institute, Beijing DaZheng Linguistry Management corporation, Shenzhen Sangxia Hi–Tech Limited Liability Company comprehended traditional Computational Linguistics, Hierarchical Network of Concept (HNC) and Semantic Analysis Based on Connotation Model Theory, etc, applied those theories above in Chinese Information processing, worked at the combination of Linguistics and Computer Science and tested the performance of the theories in order to perfect the theories, promote basic research, construct basic knowledge corpus and develop application products for computer, communication industry and so on.

The academic level of the subject is in the lead in China on the whole. Great achievements have been made in the areas of semantic searching, network security, linguistic knowledge extraction, speech recognition and contrast, and corpus integration and application. Some research results are in the lead in the world and have made great social benefits. Now we have made a series of standards on the construction of the corpus and knowledgebase for Chinese information professing. Three corpora and knowledge bases have been put into actual application, and six sub-projects have their products, three of which are already on the stage of industrialization. By the first half of 2005, the subject group has cultivated a total of 5 post-doctoral students, 22 doctoral students, and 48 graduates. 87 papers have been published, and 64 of which are supported by the 863 program. 5 monographs have been published, 21 patents or copyrights have been registered or under application.

Through the implementation of the large-scale project “Basic Research for the Application of Chinese Information Processing”, the institute established a highly effective model of scientific researching and project management. The model has provided excellent and valuable environment for the cultivation of post-graduate students and academic study.

The institute recruits post-doctoral scholars, and matriculates postgraduates of doctoral and master levels. We attach great importance on developing students’ cross-disciplinary knowledge structure and the researching capability of combining theories with application.
