School of Educational Technology

Educational Technology is a rising applied cross discipline which is formed in the long-term educational accumulation and based on the practice, continuously absorbing the research achievements of modern educational theory and psychology theory. It has become an important branch in modern educational science under the promotion and influence of the information and communication technologies.

Since its establishment, on the principle of “Focus directions, innovate mechanisms and harmoniously develop”, the School of Educational Technology (SET) has been keeping the leading level of its kind in China and cast a certain influence in the world by scientifically planning and vigorous efforts.

In recent years, SET has made great achievements in the field of Instructional System Design and Curriculum Development, Educational Applications of Computer, Knowledge Science and Engineering, Distance Education as well as Technology and Vocational Education, including 1 National Educational Research Achievement Prize, 2 Teaching Achievement Prizes at the State Level, 9 Teaching Achievement Prize at the Municipal Level, a national essence course The Basis of Educational Technology, 14 academic monographs, 68 textbooks of various kinds and over 400 papers.

Disciplinary Construction
The recruitment of undergraduate major of Educational Technology started in 1985, and the first doctoral program of Educational Technology in China was established in 1993. School of Educational Technology was officially founded at the end of 2004, which is the first independent secondary discipline college in our university. Major of Educational Technology has been keeping the leading position of its kind in China and was chosen for national key discipline for the first time in 2001, and made it again in 2007. The postdoctoral center was founded in 2004. The first Master Major of ‘Distance Education’ in China was established in 2005.
Faculty and Students Cultivation

There are two departments which are Department of Educational Technology and Department of Educational Information Engineering, an Experimental Teaching Center of Educational Technology and two University-level Key Laboratories which are Laboratory of Network Education and Laboratory of Interactive Media and Distance Learning. There are totally 56 faculties, including 8 professors, 14 associate professors, 3 senior engineers and 24 lecturers. And there are 7 doctorial tutors, 19 master tutors, 7 part-time professors and 6 part-time doctorial tutors.

Our college has formed a complete talent training system consist of junior college students, undergraduate, master, doctor and post-doctor, enlarged the recruitment scale of master students, and supplied the national educational informationization with large quantities of senior specialized talents. Over 300 undergraduates, nearly 200 master and 60 doctor students have been cultivated. More than 500 talents of educational technology and information engineering have been trained, including on-the-job postgraduates, master of education, in-service training teachers, Senior Visiting Scholars and students of senior seminar. Nearly 10 thousand talents of modern educational technology have been trained for the relevant departments of the state, universities and elementary and secondary schools. Tens of thousands of school masters and teachers have been trained for skills of educational technology.
Research
In SET, there is a MoE Project Research Center in SET—E-learning and Educational Public Service Center, and 6 research teams, including Institute of Modern Educational Technology, Research Center of Distance Education, Center for Knowledge Science and Engineering Research, Institute of Technology and Vocational Education, Institute of Education of Information Technology and Institute of Learning and Teaching Technology.

Basic Theory of Distance Education, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), Integral Advance of Regional Education Infomationization, Research and Development of Knowledge Media, Intelligent Tutoring Environment Research, Basic Theory of the Educational Application of Information Technology, Innovative Teaching and Learning in the Information Technology Environment, Online learning and Cognitive Development, Distance Learning Environment and Resource, Economics and Management of Distance Education, E-learning Technology and Environment, Knowledge Science and Engineering, Off-job Training Pattern, Curriculum development of Vocational Education. The Experimental and practical works include Network Education, Education of Information Technology, College Courses and Teaching, Educational Technology Training and Experiments, Implicit Knowledge and Innovation and so on.
International Communication and Cooperation
In recent years, SET have frequently carried out international cooperation studies and academic exchanges of visits with following scientific research organizations from aboard, international organizations and multinational corporations: European Union, Germany, Belgium, UNICEF, UNESCO, Microsoft, IBM and Apple.

Famous international specialists who have visited our college for academic exchanges are as follows: the father of memory power and the inventor of Mind Maps from UK Tony Buzan, the inventor of the Logo programming language Professor Seymour Papert and Professor Idit Harel Caperton, the chief editor of British Journal of Educational Technology Nick Rushby, the professor of Florida State University and famous international specialist of instructional design Robert Reiser, etc.

For the past few years, our college has held academic conference once a year: the 14th International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE, Nov., 2006), the 10th IASTED International Conference on Computers and Advanced Technology in Education (CATE, Oct., 2007), and the 5th International Conference on Wireless, Mobile and Ubiquitous Technologies in Education (WMUTE, Mar., 2008). The 12th Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCCCE) which is co-organized by our college held at Michigan State University in May 2008.

Faculty of our college have won prizes and reported at great international conferences for many times: Professor Ronghuai Huang chaired the branch venue of the 8th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (IEEE ICALT), and made a keynote speech on “Advanced Learning Technologies in China”. Moreover, the paper “Semantic Organization of Online Discussion Transcripts for Active Collaborative Learning” was awarded the only “best paper” of this conference.
