Research Interests:

Economic sociology/political economy: with special reference to the labour process (including occupational health and safety); different forms of labour (free and unfree labour; child labour); comparative studies of state, capital and labour relations in various countries but especially related to the development of modern Turkey - industrialisation, modernisation, privatisation, studies of work and occupation and class relations - and China.

Current Research:

On Turkey: ESRC financed project 'Change in Management Strategy and Employee Relations in Turkish Manufacturing' (special reference to the Izmit triangle and the Car, Textiles and Whitegoods industries).
On Turkey, Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, China and the UK (with Huw Beynon and Peter Fairbrother) ESRC 'Future of Work' project 'International Whitegoods Sector Comparison of Management Strategy and Employee Relations'.
On Work, Organisation and Technology in the Maritime Car Carrier Industry, ESRC financed project with (Erol Kahveci)
On occupational health and safety: HSE financed project in the role and effectiveness of safety representations (with David Walters)
