 1985年获河南大学英美语言文学硕士,1992年获美国南康涅狄格州立大学社会学硕士,1996年获英国布里斯托大学社会学博士。主要研究领域包括中国国有企业改革与中国劳工、全球化与国际海员劳动力市场、社会性别与职业、企业社会责任等。
曾任河南省南阳市第一中学教师、河南省黄河大学英美语言文学系讲师、英国GDS国际出版公司联络经理<<中国通达>>高级编辑、美国夏威夷大学妇女研究中心客座研究员、英国卡地夫大学国际海员研究中心副主任、现兼任英国格林威治大学海事研究生院副院长
参与或主持过多项社会科学调查研究项目，主要包括：英国国际海员研究中心课题 ‘欧洲商船女海员’、 ‘性别种族与阶级：豪华游轮多国海员就业及劳动过程’、‘中国英国印度三国海员职业对海员家庭影响比较研究’（1998－2002）、和上海大学社会学系合作课题 ‘中国国有企业海员劳动力市场调查’（2000－2003）、国国际劳工局项目 ‘海员：全球政策与实践’（2001－2）、英国国际运输工人基金会/英国国际海员研究中心联合研究项目‘市场经济下党的基层代表和中国工人阶级关系变化研究：中国远洋随船政委角色变化分析’（2001）、与西安大学社会与哲学学院学者合作课题 ‘海事资本与海事劳动力：中国航运工业劳动力市场结构变化新趋向’（2003）。目前参与主持的研究项目有：格林威治大学海事研究生院课题 ‘外派海员劳动力市场结构及变化：现状描述及趋势分析’（2004－2005〕、英国经济社会科学基金重点项目 ‘男女同工同酬与平等： 中国大陆香港台湾三地女职工职务晋升研究’（2003－2006）、北师大中国劳工研究中心和中山大学公共管理学院政治科学系合作课题 ‘工厂透视－工场劳动关系’（2005－2006）。
