China Labour Studies Centre

at Beijing Normal University

CLSC(BNU)

China Labour Studies Centre at Beijing Normal University (CLSC-BNU) stands at the forefront of research on the role of labour in the evolving global economy and will undertake research focusing on work, workplace, workers and their employment, skills, training or human resource development as well as their organisations in and outside of China. Through its research activities, the Centre will build strong and enduring relationships inside and outside the University. Inside, links will be created through collaboration with academics involved in research subjects relevant to labour. Outside the University, contacts will be established with key stakeholders - employers, regulators and trade union leaders - at national and international levels and with academics who share the same interests in China and in other parts of the world.

OBJECTIVE AND AIMS

The Centre’s aim and purpose is to provide excellence in research, scholarship and education in labour studies. This will be achieved by building on BNU’s substantial reputation in the field of labour history and its links with the governmental and other agencies. The Centre is committed to the analysis of contemporary issues. Its concerns are centred upon China, but inevitably within regional and international contexts. It aims to develop an interdisciplinary approach which combines high scholarly standards with accessibility to a wider audience. It is intended to provide a focus for research in labour studies with following objectives:

§         To build a strong network of contacts with central authorities, trade unions and other workers’ organisations, employers associations, voluntary and political organisations in China and beyond

§         To secure a significant amount of funding from grants bodies

§         To initiate, develop and conduct independent, objective and scientific research in the area of labour studies in China with particular encouragement to research projects from comparative approaches

§         To contribute to knowledge in the field of labour studies and to provide scientifically-obtained information on Chinese labour to policy-makers and other stakeholders which promote the improvement of the lot of Chinese workers

§         To contribute to the teaching programme of BNU in collaboration with the relevant department or departments;

§         To produce research-based books and articles in internationally refereed journals

§         To encourage collaboration with researchers at other institutions in China and abroad.

§         To develop a visiting/exchange scholars scheme between BNU and other universities in China and abroad.
